The launch of the Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) Malaysia Alumni Chapter at the British Council Malaysia marks an important step in strengthening alumni engagement and reinforcing educational ties between the United Kingdom and Malaysia.

At the core of this milestone is the power of networking. A strong alumni network creates opportunities for mentorship, collaboration, and knowledge sharing, enabling experienced graduates to support and inspire future generations. Through meaningful connections, alumni help bridge academia and industry while fostering leadership and professional growth.

UK alumni in Malaysia continue to make valuable contributions across sectors including education, business, engineering, and technology. With international exposure and global perspectives, LJMU graduates bring best practices from the UK into the Malaysian context, contributing to national development while maintaining strong global links.

The UK Degree 3+0 pathway, delivered through the long-standing partnership between Liverpool John Moores University and YPC International College, further strengthens this connection. By offering a full UK degree in Malaysia, the programme expands access to quality British education and develops globally minded, industry-ready graduates.

Hosted at the British Council, the launch reflects a shared commitment to collaboration, cultural exchange, and sustainable partnerships. The LJMU Malaysia Alumni Chapter will serve as a platform for continued engagement, collaboration, and impact across borders.

The event was graced by esteemed faculty members, including Professor Adam Shore, Director of Liverpool Business School, Ms Prabha Sundram, Head, Education (Malaysia) British Council and Dato’ Thavalingam C. Thavarajah, an LJMU alumnus and prominent labour and employment lawyer in Malaysia. The occasion was filled with heartfelt speeches, award presentations, and celebratory moments that highlighted the dedication and hard work of each graduate.

In his welcoming speech, Professor Shore offered valuable insights and advice to the graduates as they prepare to embark on their careers. He praised the graduates and reaffirmed LJMU’s commitment to international collaboration. Professor Shore also highlighted how YPC International College exemplifies the spirit and ethos of LJMU, particularly in delivering high-quality, industry-focused programmes that meet the needs of local, national, and international employers.

Ms. Sundram, in her introductory note, she commended the LJMU-YPC partnership as a testament to the enduring UK-Malaysia collaboration in education—a journey that began in 2005 and has since grown in strength, value, and innovation. She expressed pride in the way LJMU and YPC serve as an excellent example of how educational partnerships can foster people-to-people connections, drive positive change, and contribute to communities and nations, aligning with the British Council’s mission in education.

Professor Shore also extended heartfelt thanks to the British Council for their invaluable support. He noted that the British Council’s presence underscores the importance of international collaboration and shared goals.

The ceremony also featured a highlight—a contribution from an LJMU alumnus to the Social Impact Education Fund. Dato’ Thavalingam witnessed firsthand how UK higher education profoundly impacted his life and career. Now, he is committed to giving back to society. A heartfelt thanks to Dato’ Thavalingam for his support.  

The Social Impact Education Fund is a dedicated initiative aimed at fostering educational opportunities and driving positive change in the lives of underprivileged students. This fund is designed to support and empower students through scholarships and financial assistance, ensuring that higher education pursuits are accessible to all regardless of their financial background.
